TJ SCHOFIELD-SAM
3B, B/T: L/R, Stockton Ports, Single-A Oakland A’s
6ft 1in, 185 lbs, 22 years old (dob 06/20/2001), Brampton ON
2019 MLB Draft, 12th Round, 374th Overall Selection by Oakland from North Park SS
Games observed: 06/08 & 06/09 v Inland Empire (Angels)
His frame is close to maxed out with minimal physical projection remaining
Open stance with hands held low
Uses a small leg kick timing mechanism and visually at the plate reminds me a little of Alex Verdugo
Out of the 9 PA seen did not swing at any first pitch and often took the first 2 pitches
Is the approach more passive than selective at the plate is a question to answer going forward
YTD Stats (as of this writing 06/21):
236 PA, .338 wOBA, .331 OBP, .390 SLG, 8.1 BB%, 18.2 K%, 96 wRC+
A Canadian HS player gets drafted and signed in 2019…ugh. After having 85 PA in rookie ball, the world stops. Couldn’t have been a worse time from a player development standpoint than that for TJ. He lost a full season of training and development which can not be discounted. With that said, this is Schofield-Sam’s 3rd season in Single-A and that is a definite concern even if he may have been a developmental type of selection from the 12th round. TJ has shown some defensive versatility playing both corner infield spots and has played a handful of games in the OF as well, which helps his value and potential ceiling. As it stands now, TJ would likely project to be a depth/org player with defensive versatility.
Thank you for checking in today. Time to wrap it up for now and I’ll be talking with everyone again soon. Until that time comes…KEEP IT 80 GRADE!
