Up next, we took in a couple of Corpus Christi Hooks games to watch Kenedy Corona. Let’s not waste any more time and get straight into it…
KENEDY CORONA
CF, Corpus Christi Hooks, Double-A Houston
5ft 10in, 184 lbs, 23 years old
Originally signed as an International Free Agent by the NY Mets (April 2019) from Venezuela.
Acquired by the Houston Astros via trade with the Mets (December 2019) along with LHP Blake Taylor for OF Jake Marisnik.
Ranking: #18 in the organization by MLB Pipeline
Promoted to Double-A from High-A Asheville on April 18th.
Games viewed: 05/17, 05/18
Observations & Comments:
solid and athletic frame with some but not much more physical projection remaining
good speed in the OF and on the bases
swing and miss concerns over the 2 looks, especially with velo up in the zone
contact quality was not high overall in these viewing
stat line for the 2 games: 1 for 7, 3 K’s
Taking a bit of a further dive into Corona’s profile, we see a couple of stats that should raise some concerns - SwStr%, K%, BB%.
Through 115 PA in Double-A: SwStr% 16.4, K% 29.6, BB% 6.1. All three are in a territory where some uneasiness is warranted. Some red flags are saying a number with “teen” in it for SwStr%, striking out at a 30% rate, and a walk rate that has been halved since getting promoted. Adjustments to approach and improving their plate discipline are going to be needed for success at the dish.
Corona is solid to plus in the field and on the base paths along with showing his defensive versatility to play all 3 outfield spots. With some improvements in approach & discipline at the plate along with his good defensive play in the field and aggressive baserunning, Kenedy can likely fit a 4th OF type of role.
Thank you for checking in today. Couple more prospects to catch up with before we get back into seeing and reviewing Canadian Dirtbags. Will Dion & Tsung-Che Cheng reviews soon! We’ll wrap it up here for now and I’ll be talking with you all in a while. Until then, you know what to do…Keep It 80 Grade.
