Been a minute since we visited our Canadian Baseball HOF members and before MILB season gets going at full speed this week, I thought it’d be nice to see another inductee. Today we’ll be stepping into the Builder category. Let’s get straight to it -
Born: April 23, 1897, Newtonbrook, ON
Died: December 27, 1972, Ottawa, ON
Inducted: August 1983
The easiest way to describe their background is that he was active in many sports and calling them “all-around athlete” would be the best way to represent their athleticism but doesn’t truly express their athletic prowess. While they never played in the MLB, he did play with his brother Vaughn in the Ontario Intercounty Baseball League with the Guelph Maple Leafs. They had other extensive sports experiences while attending the University of Toronto where he was a standout rugby player and played some basketball as well. After his time with the Varsity Blues, they went to Oxford University where he played hockey and was part of the team that won the first Spengler Cup in 1923.1 Dude can flat-out play no matter the sport. He spent time with the Montreal Expos organization as an honorary board member. The ***** Cup was named after him which was awarded to the winner of the annual exhibition games between the Jays and Expos (1978-1986)2
Now I can’t say that he is the only inductee in the Canadian HOF or in Cooperstown to have won the following award, however, there can’t be many that can say they won a Nobel Peace Prize (1957). He was awarded the prize for his contributions to resolving the Suez Crisis.3 He is far better known to the world for his public service and his work in Canadian politics.
